The Alaska Building created for Visser & Smit Bouw, Modulus Projectontwikkeling by Netherlands architecture office KOW. This building have 30.000 m2 of office spaces and 11.000 m2 of underground parking. A glass volume is a logical translation of a large program within the requirements of the masterplan and historic boundaries of a relatively small plot of land. The urban planning context and the indepth plans ask for a large degree of transparency in the façades.
In combination with demanding climate control requirements, the application of insulated façades is a justified choice. The fire security of this entirely glazed building has been solved in an ingenious manner, whereby sprinkler systems are not necessary. Through means of a simple form, the building is understated with sensitive detailing, strengthening the architectural design.
