The King Residence just about a mile from the beach in Santa Monica California, designed by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects. This home has living and open space to the bedroom with a relatively large exterior patio and public entrance that faces the street- road and surrounding houses. While the design house’s formal facilitate a more open relationship with the surrounding communities, it also recognizes that there are tensions between the public and private character of what, ultimately, is this family home.

The structure can be viewed as a series of vertical and horizontal planes, and according to this interpretation, the walls of the house was green and white cement board, an inflection in towards the site, has a shelter, the quality of privatization. Similarly, the roof to eat and “hangout” wings, sloping down to follow the sloping site, the anchor structure to the earth and its inhabitants – and for every other formal qualities. By responding to a street corner with a void, rather than volume, and setting the house toward the rear of this site, the home crowd is not the environment – it emits a sense of decency, generosity. Quality is further strengthened by the composition of overlapping planes and layers, which splits the masses and project a sense of permeability; from the road, one can even see straight through the home. Both wood screen has the same inside and outside, the design of the house managed to become both serious and relaxed – to create conditions for life-style, flexible, open, communal orientation, while at the same time using a palette of fine materials and details.- John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects
